Sedtrans05: An improved sediment-transport model for continental shelves and coastal waters with a new algorithm for cohesive sediments
نویسندگان
چکیده
The one-dimensional (vertical) sediment-transport model SEDTRANS96 has been upgraded to predict more accurately both cohesive and non-cohesive sediment transport. Sedtrans05 computes the bed shear stress for a given set of flow and seabed conditions using combined wave-current bottom boundary layer theory. Sediment transport (bedload and total load) is evaluated using one of five methods. The main modifications to the original version of the model are: (1) a reorganization of the code so that the computation routines can be easily accessed from different user interfaces, or may be called from other programs; (2) the addition of the Van Rijn method to the options for non-cohesive sediment transport; (3) the computation of density and viscosity of water from temperature and salinity inputs; and (4) the addition of a new cohesive sediment algorithm. This latter algorithm introduces variations of sediment properties with depth, represents the suspended sediment as a spectrum of settling velocities (i.e. size classes), includes the flocculation process, and models multiple erosion–deposition cycles. The new model matches slightly better the field measurements of non-cohesive sediment transport, than does the predictions by SEDTRANS96. The sand-transport calibration has been extended to high transport rates. The cohesive sediment algorithm reproduced well experimental data from annular flume experiments. r 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Remote Sensing of Tidal Situation by Monitoring Changes in Suspended Sediment Concentration in Surface Waters
Collecting information on suspended sediments concentration (SSC) in coastal waters and estuaries is vital for proper management of coastal environments. Traditionally, SSC used to be measured by time consuming and costly point measurements. This method allows the accurate measurement of SSC only for a point in space and time. Remote sensing from air-borne and space-borne sensors have proved to...
متن کاملPrediction of Cohesive Sediment Erosion Rate and Analyzing the Effective Parameters Using Artificial Neural Network
Transferring mechanic of cohesive sediments are different from non-cohesive sediments. For determining the erosion rate of non-cohesive sediments, physical parameters such as average diameter and density are used, such as average diameter and density. Due to the nature of the cohesive sediments, their erosion rates are determined interrelated with the shear stress of the bed with fixed coeffici...
متن کاملModelling enteric bacteria level in coastal and estuarine waters
Details are given in this paper of the development of a numerical model for describing the bacterial transport processes in estuarine and coastal waters. The transport of enteric bacteria is influenced by many physical, chemical and biological factors, including both the suspended and bed sediments. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have shown that generally the sediments contain...
متن کاملMassive marine methane emissions from near-shore shallow coastal areas
Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas contributing to climate warming. The open ocean is a minor source of methane to the atmosphere. We report intense methane emissions from the near-shore southern region of the North Sea characterized by the presence of extensive areas with gassy sediments. The average flux intensities (~130 μmol m(-2) d(-1)) are one order of magnitude higher th...
متن کاملThe impact of sedimentary alkalinity release on the water column CO2 system in the North Sea
It has been previously proposed that alkalinity release from sediments can play an important role in the carbonate dynamics on continental shelves, lowering the pCO2 of seawater and hence increasing the CO2 uptake from the atmosphere. To test this hypothesis, sedimentary alkalinity generation was quantified within cohesive and permeable sediments across the North Sea during two cruises in Septe...
